First Year Experience (FYE)

Welcome to Cleveland State Community College! We are glad you are here! Congratulations on taking the first steps to realizing your dreams and reaching your career goals.

In order to assist you in a successful beginning at Cleveland State, we have developed a First-Year Experience (FYE) program that will help you “get connected.” The more quickly you get connected with your instructors, your advisor, your fellow students, and your resources, the more likely you will be successful at Cleveland State.

We want you to connect, so you can complete your studies at Cleveland State!

The specific programs that we have designed for you to quickly get connected are:

Your next connection will be the NSAR session. At NSAR you will have opportunities to speak with an advisor, financial aid counselor, enrollment advisors and ACCESS department counselors. You will also meet the president and vice-presidents of the college. At the end, you will register for your classes and begin your college academic career. Pretty exciting stuff!

Once you’ve been through NSOO and NSAR, it’s time to have a little fun! Cleveland State’s Freshmen Connection is a time to do all of those things that still need doing like getting your ID, buying your books, taking a tour of the campus, finding your classrooms and making new friends with your fellow students. At the same time, enjoy some music, play a few games, attend information seminars, and have a little lunch on us.  The whole family is invited!

We highly encourage you to take the first year seminar class. This class is everything to do about you! Find out how you learn, how you can connect to Cleveland State and how to network. Is your major right for you? What are your strengths? What do you love to do? You will also develop an academic plan for your two years at Cleveland State!

One of the most beneficial relationships you can make at Cleveland State is with your advisor. Your advisor is interested in keeping you on the right path to reach your academic goals. We urge you to meet with your advisor as often as you feel it is necessary. It is mandatory that you meet with your advisor prior to registering for each semester. We want to make sure that you are on the right path!

Another way that Cleveland State will connect with you, and we hope you never make this connection, is through our Early Alert program. The Early Alert program is designed to flag those students that may be at risk in failing a course. That’s why we hope that we never have to contact you for this reason. However, if you are struggling with a course, we want to see what we can do to help you succeed before it’s too late!
