What is Allied Health Science Emphasis: University Parallel ?

The Allied Health Science A.S. degree is a general degree that allows students to take general education classes in preparation for applying to the Nursing program. While the nursing program at Cleveland State is an A.A.S. degree, this University parallel A.S. degree provides direction for the student taking the general education credits required for the Nursing A.A.S. degree. Even if a student decides not to pursue nursing, the courses listed in this degree provide a solid foundation for a variety of different programs of study.

What will I learn?

The student will gain a foundation in the sciences by taking Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Microbiology. These three courses are the most closely linked to nursing. The student will also take two psychology courses, English Composition I, Introductory Statistics and a humanities/fine arts elective.

What are my options at Cleveland State Community College?

All of the options listed in this major do not have to be completed prior to applying to the nursing program. There are some additional general education courses listed in this major which are not required for the nursing major. However, often the students find these courses beneficial as they build full time course schedules for the semesters prior to entering the nursing program.

Some students choose to complete all of the general education requirements prior to entering nursing and other students apply to nursing prior to fully completing the general education courses. Some students may choose this Allied Health Science A.S. as well as the Nursing A.A.S degree so that they will graduate with a double major.

NOTE: Students should be sure to read the CSCC Catalog to be sure they are aware of all requirements for admission to the CSCC nursing program.

What can I do with this degree?

The courses required in this degree will start the student on a journey toward acceptance to the Nursing program. The classes taken in this degree will benefit the student even if they do not apply/enter nursing at CSCC, but instead choose to pursue a bachelor in science degree at a four year institution. This degree prepares students well for a baccalaureate degree in many science related or health care related fields.

What are my options to pay for this degree?

  • A student is encouraged to apply early for financial aid.
