CLEVELAND, TN - Cleveland State Community College welcomes Dr. Corey Campbell as the new Vice President for Academic Affairs. Campbell was the Vice President for Student Engagement and Retention at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, New York, for three years before coming to Cleveland State. Campbell replaces Dr. Barsha Pickell who stepped down to return to her passion of classroom teaching.

Cleveland State President Dr. Ty Stone said, “I am excited Dr. Campbell is joining our leadership team at Cleveland State. He has a strong track record of success and was overwhelmingly selected by the campus community. His experience in academics as well as student affairs brings a unique perspective. I look forward to the great things that we will accomplish at Cleveland State under Dr. Campbell's leadership.”

With a master’s degree in sport management, Campbell began his career in education as an instructor and coordinator for the executive fitness program at Northwood University in Florida. He also worked as assistant director of student affairs at Nova Southeastern University and director of sports medicine and fitness technology at Keiser University in Florida. Campbell’s background in sports management influenced his career from a global perspective. He said, “Sport is a global phenomenon and business, much like education. I have taught sport management related courses and completed multiple proposals for business expansion within the sport and fitness industry.”

After earning his doctorate in higher education leadership, Campbell was promoted to dean of academic affairs and later became dean of students at Keiser University before moving to Jefferson Community College. While at Jefferson, Campbell was named 20 under 40 Northern New York Emerging Leaders.

With more than 15 years in higher education, Campbell said, “My previous work with academic affairs and student affairs gives me a holistic perspective of student needs within and outside of the classroom. I am proud of the lasting relationships I’ve established with students and colleagues over the years.”

The Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic officer of the college and oversees the academic divisions, deans and teaching faculty. As a member of the president’s senior staff, Campbell will provide support for the administrative leadership of the college.

Originally from Miami, Florida, Campbell earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Florida, where he is also a Hall of Fame Inductee. Campbell and his wife, Ashley, have two young children, Ella and Benjamin. An avid Chicago Bulls, Detroit Lions and Florida Gator fan, he enjoys exercising, bowling, hiking and spending time with his family.

Campbell said, “Cleveland State has a great working environment with skilled professionals who care about student success, and I look forward to working with and getting to know the campus community.”
