CLEVELAND, Tenn.- Cleveland State Community College received word on Tuesday that the Tennessee Board of Nursing (TBN) lifted its sanction that has prohibited the college from enrolling new Nursing Program cohorts since last summer. This news came from the official TBN Board meeting held on Wednesday in Nashville. This decision was based on the fact that the college completed the 2017 calendar year with a first-time pass rate that exceeds the 85 percent benchmark on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).

Dr. Bill Seymour, Cleveland State President, said, “The Tennessee Board of Nursing expressed best wishes to CSCC upon voting unanimously to grant full approval to its Associate degree program in Nursing,” stated Dr. Bill Seymour, CSCC President. “This is the formal approval we have been looking for and assures our ability to enroll new cohorts as early as this summer.”

The college has taken measures to assist the students through various program and curriculum improvements.  A federal grant allowed the college to hire a dedicated tutor specifically for the Nursing program to provide individual and group sessions, in addition to the regular attention of faculty, theory advisors and academic advisors. A completion coach was also added to provide support for students when “life issues” impact their success in the program.

There has also been an increase in test preparation which includes test-taking strategy seminars, test-taking webinars for continued study, as well as mandatory practice NCLEX style tests.

Nancy Thomas, Interim Director of Nursing, said, “We are delighted with the Board’s recognition of the quality of CSCC’s program and its ongoing commitment to excellence.”

The Nursing Department will be hosting a Nursing Information Session on Monday, March 19 at 5 p.m. in the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. Anyone planning to apply to the CSCC Nursing program this fall should attend this Nursing Information Session. Members of the Nursing Admissions Committee will explain the admissions requirements and the admission process. Members of the Student Nurses Association, who are current nursing students, will be available to answer questions about their experiences in the nursing program. Staff members from the Testing Center (KAPLAN Admissions Test) and Financial Aid will also be available to answer questions. Prospective students will learn about admission testing, ways to deal with anxiety associated with test taking, the requirements of the nursing program and will also be able to take a tour of the nursing media center and lab.
