The Tennessee Board of Nursing (TBN) rendered a decision on Friday, May 20, 2016 to suspend Cleveland State’s Nursing Program from admitting future classes until they reach the required benchmark (85%) for passing the NCLEX license exam in the first attempt.  The Nursing Program remains accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Cleveland State had been on a TBN warning status for not meeting this benchmark.  While the pass rate had improved this past year, the program still did not achieve the 85% mark; prompting this recent decision.

The status of currently enrolled nursing students remains unchanged, and Cleveland State is approved to teach these students through their program completion.  At this time, the status of the class recently admitted for the Fall 2016 is unclear.  Cleveland State will communicate this information as soon as clarification is provided by TBN.

This decision has no immediate impact on pre-nursing students (those working toward actual enrollment in the Nursing Program).  The college will continue to provide accredited courses necessary for pre-nursing students to qualify for entry into a RN program.

President Dr. Bill Seymour said, “As disappointing as this is for the college, we wanted to make sure our campus and local communities know about this decision as soon as possible.”  He further stated, “The Cleveland State Nursing Program has a strong and respected history, and we are committed to return to this level of strength as soon as possible.”

Cleveland State is prepared to answer questions from all current and prospective students.  Questions can be directed to (423) 614-8750, nursing@clevelandstatecc.edu or you may visit the Adkisson Administration Building between the hours of 8 a.m. - 4:30 pm daily.
