What is Pre-Occupational Therapy: General Transfer?

The Pre-Occupational Therapy emphasis is designed to prepare students for transfer to a bachelor’s degree granting institution. This program prepares students for more advanced study in a pathway through which students can pursue careers in physical therapy, assistive technology trainer, early intervention occupational therapist, and industrial rehabilitation consultant.

What will I learn?

All students who complete a degree designated as a Tennessee Transfer Pathway will be able to do the following:

  1. Communicate effectively through oral and written modes, using conventions appropriate to their audience and purpose, including critical listening, reading, and research skills.
  2. Evaluate the significance of humanity’s cultural heritage and diversity and its development in a historical and/or global context through critical and analytical
    methodologies.
  3. Connect knowledge of social and cultural institutions to issues of personal or public   importance.
  4. Analyze historical and contemporary issues by drawing on historical contexts.
  5. Demonstrate a broad understanding of scientific principles and concepts.
  6. Apply relevant mathematical modeling to a variety of applied or theoretical problems.

In addition, students who complete the Pre-Occupational Therapy emphasis will understand the basic factors affecting Occupational Therapy.

What can I do with this degree?

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Pre-Occupational Therapy provides the training necessary for a number of jobs.  Some popular in our local service area include:


Occupational Therapy Assistants:  Assists occupational therapists in providing occupational therapy treatments and procedures. May, in accordance with State laws, assist in development of treatment plans, carry out routine functions, direct activity programs, and document the progress of treatments.


Physical Therapist Aides:  Under close supervision of a physical therapist or physical therapy assistant, perform only delegated, selected or routine tasks in specific situations. These duties include preparing the patient and the treatment area.


Occupational Health and Safety Technicians: Collect data on work environments for analysis by occupational health and safety specialists. Implement and conduct evaluation of programs designed to limit chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic risks to workers.

What are my options to pay for this degree?

  • Apply for financial aid at www.FAFSA.gov
  • A student is encouraged to apply early for financial aid. He/she must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the FAFSA Renewal Application as soon as possible after October 1 to ensure that the Financial Aid Office receives the Institutional Student Information Record and other documents prior to the priority deadline. July 1st is the priority deadline for applying for the fall semester and December 1st for the spring semester.

Fall Semester Milestones

BIOL 1110 requires completion of all Reading and Writing Learning Support requirements.

If you have Writing Learning Support requirements, then you will need to register for ENGL 0900 in addition to ENGL 1010. If you have Reading Learning Support requirements, then you will need to register for READ 0810 in addition to ENGL 1010. 

    • GEN 1010 can be taken as a two week bootcamp that runs for 3 hours per day for the 10 weekdays prior to the first day of class.
    •  
    • PSYC 1030 requires completion of Reading and Writing Learning Support requirements.
    •  
    • FINANCIAL AID ALERT - If you receive aid, the priority deadline to apply or renew your FAFSA and submit any requested documentation could be near. Be sure to check your Cleveland State email daily for deadlines, announcements, and award updates for the academic year. Spring Semester Milestones

    • CHEM 1110 requires completion of ALL Learning Support requirements.
      If you have not had high school chemistry or CHEM 1010, you need to enroll in CHEM 1010 before enrolling in CHEM 1110.
    •  
    • ENGL 1020 requires completion of ENGL 1010 with a grade of C or higher.
    •  
    • MATH 1720 requires a Math ACT score of 22 or higher. Otherwise, completion of MATH 1710 is required. MATH 1720 is an option for students who have not completed MATH 1710.
    •  
  • FINANCIAL AID ALERT - Now is the time to begin thinking about financial aid for next semester. Be sure to check your Cleveland State email daily for deadlines, announcements, and award updates for the upcoming academic year. Please contact your success coach or academic advisor if you have any questions.

    • BIOL 2020 requires completion of all Reading and Writing Learning Support requirements and a course in either high school or college level Chemistry within the last 5 years.

    • MATH 1530 requires a Math ACT score of 19 or higher. If you have Math Learning Support requirements, then you will need to register for a MATH 0530 S section in addition to MATH 1530 S section (corequisite). Completion of SAILS satisfies Math Learning Support requirements.
    •  
    • All History courses requires completion of Reading Learning Support requirements.
      Students should take the history sequence required by the senior institution.
      For example, UTK and UTC prefer World History whereas TTU and MTSU prefer US History.

    • PHYS 2010 is not offered on campus but may be taken through the TN eCampus.

GRADUATION - Apply to graduate by completing the online Intent to Graduate form. This can be found under the Graduation Tab within the Registration Tools and Forms on Cougarnet. You will need to schedule to take your exit exam and/or program test at mycs.cc/testing. These will be taken in the Testing Center.
